This is a really well-written book with a compelling story. Asayi’s journey through extremely difficult circumstances in a time when autism was not understood is grueling, and ultimately, rewarding. This story weaves in lots of interesting details about Japanese history, so the reader comes away with a new appreciation of medieval Japan. - Erin S McIntyre

The self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet is proud to exhibit “Asayi: An Autistic Teen’s Journey to Topple a Shogun in Medieval Japan” by Sharon Curcio at two upcoming book events this April in California: the Book Confab LA and the 2025 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books (LATFOB) on April 26-27, 2025, at the University of Southern California (USC) campus, Los Angeles.

At the Book Confab LA, authors will engage readers beyond the craft of writing. Attendees will immerse themselves in character development, challenge preconceptions, and explore the journey behind the stories. The Los Angeles Times Festival of Books (LATFOB) is the largest free public event celebrating literature in the US, attracting 150,000 attendees.

There’s harrowing tension in being Asayi. As an autistic young woman navigating a world dominated by power struggles and unrelenting political upheaval, Asayi’s story is one of resilience, identity, and defiance against oppression. Readers will be drawn not only to her journey but also to the remarkable individuals who form her circle—those who dare to challenge a punitive regime in an era where deception, court intrigue, and shifting alliances dictate survival.

Rich with historical detail, “Asayi” immerses readers in the perilous realities of medieval Japan. It is a world where warriors and underbelly figures from all levels of society emerge, ghostly apparitions haunt the living, and secret identities hold the key to rebellion. At its heart, Curcio’s novel is about finding one’s place in an unforgiving world, forging bonds of loyalty and love, and standing against injustice—themes that echo across time and remain strikingly relevant today.

With its masterful storytelling, layered intrigue, and captivating characters, “Asayi” delivers a powerful underdog story that resonates deeply with modern readers.
