​Baltimore, MD—(February 24, 2025) Cambium, the supply chain technology company revolutionizing the wood industry with sustainable materials and smarter supply and logistics, today announced the launch of Carbon Smart™ Wood for mass timber, the industry’s first cross-laminated timber (CLT) product made from salvaged wood. By integrating carbon avoidance, traceability, and high-performance engineered wood products, Carbon Smart™ CLT provides a modern and environmentally responsible solution for construction.

Cross-laminated timber, a type of mass timber, is an engineered wood product made by layering panels of lumber in alternating directions and bonding them together with adhesives. With its technology, Cambium connects arborists, sawmills and manufacturers in one platform, transforming the supply chain to source salvaged wood that is manufactured into Carbon Smart™ Wood for CLT, which is viable for commercial buildings, residential projects, and infrastructure.

CLT made from Carbon Smart™ Wood combines the strength and versatility of engineered wood with the environmental benefits of mass timber and the added value of wood salvaged from the waste stream. It can be used alongside or as a replacement for steel and concrete—two of the most carbon-intensive building materials—delivering superior carbon reduction by storing approximately one metric ton of CO₂ per cubic meter, all while meeting stringent structural standards. By using salvaged and responsibly sourced wood, Carbon Smart™ CLT supports a circular economy while delivering unmatched performance and seamless integration into existing supply chains. Through partnerships with leading CLT manufacturers, including Vaagen Timbers, Mercer Mass Timber, SmartLam North America, and Sterling Structural, Cambium will ensure consistent supply and quality of their CLT product.

The company’s platform has already demonstrated significant impact, moving over 8 million board feet of its Carbon Smart™ Wood from waste streams and sequestering over 10,000 tonnes of CO2e through its national network of over 240 arborists, sawmills, and truckers.

To spearhead Cambium’s expansion into this sector, Charles Gale has joined the team as the Director of Mass Timber. Charles brings experience from SmartLam, where he spent seven years contributing to the company’s growth as one of the largest mass timber manufacturers in the US while assisting in the mass timber supply of more than 300+ projects across the nation. In his new role, he drives the expansion of salvaged material in the built environment with Carbon Smart™ Wood for mass timber, optimizing it for large-scale projects.

At the upcoming International Mass Timber Conference in Portland, Oregon, Cambium will unveil the Carbon Smart Campfire Coil, a fully integrated mass timber art exhibit with an unprecedented story. This installation, created in collaboration with RIOS, Sterling, Minimal Impact Engineering, and other partners, demonstrates the innovative potential of sustainable wood products sourced from Carbon Smart salvaged materials.
