- Research from Three UK shows Brits are obsessed with searching for trivia about their favourite movies and actors whilst they watch
- Demi Moore, Ariana Grande and Ralph Fiennes top the list of most searched Oscar nominations this month
- Three customers can get up to 24 months of Paramount+ access included in their phone plan to stream their favourite blockbusters
Gone are the days of simply watching a film. New data shows 87% of Brits are obsessed with looking up stats and facts about films and actors while they watch them.
Research released by Three, the UK’s Fastest 5G Network, reveals that we are a nation of ‘Movie Miners.’ Over a third (35%) of Gen Z are spending more time scrolling for film facts than they do actually watching, and over half (52%) of us reach for our phones to search for movie trivia within 20 minutes of pressing play.
The revelation comes as movie-watching peaks ahead of the Oscars this Sunday, with a quarter (26%) of Brits planning to watch all the nominated films, and nearly half (48%) saying they’ll be tuning in to the ceremony.
Research from Three, who offer access to a catalogue of blockbuster movies on Paramount+ for customers on ‘Value’ and ‘Complete’ airtime plans, shows that the nation is captivated by big-screen stars. With nearly a third (32%) admitting they never watch a film without looking up the actors online.
This is clear to see, as Google search popularity for the Oscars’ most glamourous nominees have skyrocketed in the month’s lead up to the big event, increasing by a staggering 97% for Pamela Anderson, 95% for Saldaña and 91% for Mikey Maddison. Film fans admit they are also hooked with scanning for the latest news on Demi Moore (27%), Ariana Grande (23%), Ralph Fiennes (18%) and Timothée Chalamet (18%).
The research also found that the reason Brits love looking up film trivia on their phones is to satisfy their curiosity (83%) and educate themselves (37%).
When movie-mining, Brits are most likely to search for:
- Actors’ filmographies (61%)
- The real ages of actors (43%)
- If a movie is based on a true story or not (40%)
- Where the movie was shot (37%)
- Who the actors are in relationships with (29%)
- Who made the film’s soundtrack (26%)
When it comes to how we’re consuming the latest releases, most Brits (57%) report their ideal evening involves sticking a film on their favourite streaming platform and watching it from the comfort of their own sofa. To support this, Three is offering customers up to 24 months of Paramount+ access included in their phone plan to stream the hottest blockbusters.
Three found that the nation is also movie-mining for film trivia on the move. 39% reported brushing up on their movie knowledge on the way to the cinema, with 46% looking up stats and facts on their way home.
Three customers on ‘Value’ or ‘Complete’ airtime plan can get up to 24 months of Paramount+ access included, the perfect perk for film fans or those who prefer a night in. A mountain of entertainment, Paramount+ is the UK streaming service with blockbuster movies, new originals, and exclusive series.
Plus, Three customers also get lots of other perks and benefits, including weekly offers on the Three+ rewards app, with exclusive deals from leading brands across food and drink, entertainment, days out, wellbeing and shopping.
