The 100 MW photovoltaic milestone installed by ENGIE reached at Valeo in Belgium

On Wednesday, March 12, in the presence of Cécile Neven, Walloon Minister for Energy, Climate, Housing, and Airports, ENGIE inaugurated a 3 MWp solar installation at Valeo, marking the milestone of 100 MWp installed by ENGIE at companies across Belgium. The installation, consisting of 4,400 panels, will cover 25% of the electricity needs at the Valeo site in Ath.

ENGIE, through its subsidiary Sun4Business, reaches an important milestone: after 9 years of operation, it inaugurates its 100th MWp of photovoltaic panels installed on company premises. Solar energy is a cornerstone of Belgium’s crucial energy transition. ENGIE has already installed similar systems at 212 sites for 90 different customers. This new contract highlights the relevance of ENGIE’s strategy in Belgium, which aims to accelerate the development of renewable energy production and flexibility, while supporting Belgian companies on their path to carbon neutrality.

In 2021, Valeo launched its CAP 50 decarbonization program. Valeo’s commitment to carbon neutrality and its circular economy approach are reflected in environmental innovations throughout its value chain. Industrial innovations, in particular, focus on improving energy efficiency at industrial sites and eliminating fossil fuels from operations. Valeo’s Ath site is reducing its carbon footprint by generating 25% of its energy consumption from renewable sources.

The installation includes 1,500 panels mounted on a 275-space carport and 2,900 panels installed on the roof of Valeo’s Ath plant. With a total output of 3 MWp, the 4,400 photovoltaic panels will produce nearly 3 GWh annually, equivalent to the consumption of 1,000 households. 80% of the panels’ output will be consumed locally by Valeo, covering 25% of the site’s electricity needs. This local production of green energy will prevent the emission of 500 tonnes of CO2 each year.

ENGIE was responsible for installing the panels, as well as the carport, reinforcing the high-voltage cabin, and renovating the factory roof. Additionally, ENGIE financed the project through a third-party investor mechanism, allowing Valeo to focus on its core activities. This “all-in” solution supports Valeo’s decarbonization journey.

Cécile Neven, Walloon Minister for Energy and the Air-Climate Plan:I would like to congratulate the Valeo and ENGIE teams for their dedication and vision. The success of the energy transition relies on the collaboration of all stakeholders. This project is a perfect illustration of the convergence between industrial innovation and environmental responsibility. It also contributes to a more resilient and eco-friendly energy model.

Jean-Luc di Paola-Galloni, Valeo Group Corporate Vice-President, Sustainable Development and External Affairs: “Valeo is delighted to be partnering with ENGIE to strengthen our commitment to decarbonization. For over 20 years, our environmental management decisions have reflected our dedication to addressing the full scope of sustainable development challenges, including at the industrial level. Thanks to our collaboration with ENGIE Belgium, our Valeo site in Ath, which leads in lighting systems technology for the automotive sector, is achieving its goal of transitioning to decarbonized energy.”

Vincent Verbeke, CEO of ENGIE Belgium: “As we journey towards zero carbon, it is important to celebrate key milestones to reflect on our progress and fuel our efforts for the future. At Valeo, we are proud to mark the installation of 100 MWp of photovoltaic power. This project is significant both in its size and scope – particularly the carport installation. It is another step in bringing our ENERGIZE 2030 strategy to life, focusing on renewable energy, flexibility, and decarbonization for our customers. I want to thank my teams for their dedication and Valeo for their trust in us.
