Toshiba to Relocate Corporate Manufacturing Engineering Center

Tokyo – WEBWIRE

Toshiba Corporation has announced the relocation of its Corporate Manufactuing Engineering Center (hereinafter “CMC”), the driving force of R&D into core manufacturing technologies for the entire Toshiba Group. Scheduled for completion by 2029, the move will take the CMC from Isogo-ku, Yokohama to Komukai-Toshiba-cho, Saiwai-ku, Kawasaki, both in Kanagawa Prefecture. The new location is home to several of Toshiba Group’s operations, including “Innovation Pallette,” the central R&D facility for basic technologies.

The move is a part of the “Toshiba’s Revitalization Plan,” announced in May last year, which aims for the creation of innovative technologies, their rapid commercialization and improved productivity.

As announced on February 19, 2025, Toshiba is consolidating the Group’s R&D divisions in  Corporate Laboratory, a new organization, on April 1. CMC is a part of this unification. Through the organizational change and relocation, the company will optimiz and streamline its R&D structure.

CMC was established as the Manufactuing Engineering Laboratory in 1970. While expanding its technical expertise through operations in different Group factories, it has built Toshiba Group’s manufacturing foundations. It integrated its offices at Isogo in 1992, and became the CMC in April 1994. The forthcoming relocation will optimize its R&D structure, eliminate the issue of aging buildings, and promote collaborations among R&D divisions and with business units, and co-creation with external partners.

Toshiba concluded a contract for the sale of CMC’s current site in Isogo to The Nisshin OilliO Group, Ltd. Under a separate agreement, the company will lease the site while it develops the new Komukai facility, and after the relocation, it will raze the current buildings and vacate the site, by the end of March, 2031.

In April 2025, within the new Corporate Laboratory, CMC will become the Production Innovation Technology Center. Under this new name, it will continue to extend its record of research and development achievements that improve Toshiba Group’s productivity and value creation.
