Global Asbestos Awareness Week 2025 and Resources in Puerto Rico to Protect Workers and Building Occupants

Next week, the 21^st Global Asbestos Awareness Week (GAAW) takes place from April 1^st through the 7^th. The event is designed to raise public awareness of asbestos hazards and related diseases which continue to impact people around the world. It is also an opportunity to promote ways to prevent exposure to asbestos fibers.

Asbestos is a generic name given to six fibrous minerals that have been used in commercial products for decades. Exposure to asbestos fibers over time can result in mesothelioma, asbestosis, lung cancer, and other forms of cancer. Sadly, asbestos is still used in some countries, but even in places like the United States that banned most uses years ago, exposure hazards still exist. This is due to the fact that asbestos was used in thousands of products and building materials that can still be found in ships and buildings.

“For most people, the primary route of exposure comes from the inhalation of airborne fibers,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “Tragically, there are still thousands of new cases of mesothelioma reported each year in the United States.
