WunderGraph, the creator of Cosmo, the world’s most widely adopted open-source GraphQL Federation solution, today announced $7.5 million in Series A funding led by Karma Ventures, eBay Ventures, and Aspenwood Ventures. The funding will accelerate WunderGraph’s mission to provide seamless, scalable API Management for major consumer platforms while expanding its managed service offerings. The company has seen tremendous growth in the last year, including a surge of 15x in weekly downloads and more than 10x growth of their managed service users.

“APIs run the world’s biggest platforms, but at scale, they can turn into bottlenecks. WunderGraph cuts through the complexity - it’s efficient, scalable, and open. World-leading customer interest confirms its potential to redefine how modern applications are built. We’re excited to partner with the WunderGraph team as they set a new standard for the industry,” said Tommi Uhari, Partner at Karma Ventures

Companies’ Problem: Orchestrating countless APIs in an ever-changing tech landscape

As digital platforms scale, managing APIs becomes exponentially more complex. Large consumer platforms like streaming services and marketplaces rely on thousands of APIs to power their apps, requiring seamless orchestration across multiple sources. Traditional API management solutions create bottlenecks, forcing engineering teams to spend months building and maintaining API gateways instead of innovating.

While existing GraphQL tools provide some relief, enterprise customers are increasingly frustrated with vendor lock-in, high costs, tool complexity, and proprietary technologies that limit flexibility and strain budgets.

eBay, one of the world’s largest ecommerce platforms, sought an open-source alternative, leading them to offer funding to WunderGraph through eBay Ventures in addition to their existing commercial relationship.

“At eBay, our developers leverage Federated GraphQL management tools to enhance productivity and streamline ways of working, all in service of providing more innovative experiences for our customers,” said Bryan Woodruff, VP of Seller Experience Engineering at eBay. “Our investment in WunderGraph’s highly performant open-source platform will help boost eBay’s API ecosystem and enable our teams to work faster and smarter in building products that help our sellers thrive.”

WunderGraph’s Solution: Cosmo - an Open-Source GraphQL Federation Platform

WunderGraph solves these problems with Cosmo, an open-source GraphQL Federation solution that provides comprehensive, full-lifecycle API management. Cosmo integrates essential features such as a schema registry, composition checks, analytics, metrics, tracing, and routing into a single package, enabling seamless management of both monolithic and federated GraphQL APIs. Licensed under Apache 2.0, Cosmo allows for flexible deployment options, including 100% on-premises setups or utilizing WunderGraph’s managed services, ensuring no vendor lock-in. This robust platform allows Platform Engineering teams to efficiently build, manage, and scale their GraphQL architectures.

“Having eBay as a customer allows us to prepare our solution for massive scale and improve the compatibility with existing architectures of enterprises,” said Jens Neuse, Co-Founder & CEO of WunderGraph. “With the funding, we’re doubling down on this as well as investing into new capabilities to better support collaboration across teams.”

“Open-source is the future of API management, and enterprises are demanding transparency, flexibility, and control,” said Stefan Avram, Co-Founder & Chief Customer Officer of WunderGraph. “We’re building the essential plumbing for the world’s biggest platforms, and this funding allows us to scale while keeping our commitment to open-source development.”
