- In 2025, Ferrovial’s social programs will benefit 23,741 people in Spain, Africa, Latin America and Asia
Global infrastructure leader Ferrovial will earmark 550,000 euro in 2025 to finance its ‘On the move for Water‘ and ‘On the move for Zero Hunger’ programs, benefiting 23,741 people.
This year, Ferrovial will work with Fundación Codespa, Manos Unidas, Ingeniería para la Cooperación – ICLI and Nuevo Hogar Betania to improve access to drinking water and sanitation in developing countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia, and to upgrade food pantries in Spain so as to provide quality food to people at risk of exclusion.
The agreements with these organizations were signed at a ceremony in Madrid that was attended by Ferrovial Chairman, Rafael del Pino, and CEO, Ignacio Madridejos, as well as Manos Unidas President, Cecilia Pilar Gracia, Fundación Codespa President, Andrés Fontenla, Head of External Relations at Ingeniería para la Cooperación – ICLI, Javier López Amigo, and the Director and Founder of Nuevo Hogar Betania, Begoña Arana.
Since their inception in 2005, the company’s social programs in Spain, Asia, Latin America and Africa have benefited over 662,741 people. The initiatives, to which close to 12 million euro have been allocated to date, highlight the company’s goal of having a positive impact on communities and the environment, as well as contributing to the attainment of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
On the move for water: basic water access infrastructure
According to the United Nations, more than a quarter of the world’s population does not have access to drinking water and nearly 50% lacks a safe, hygienic sanitation system. Faced with this challenge, Ferrovial’s ‘Social Infrastructure’ program has been supporting water and sanitation infrastructure construction, rehabilitation and improvement projects in vulnerable communities in Africa, Latin America and Asia for fifteen years, in collaboration with Spanish NGOs. In addition to funding the work, the company encourages its employees to participate as volunteers by contributing their expertise and technical knowledge to bring these cooperation projects to a successful conclusion.
Fundación Codespa is one of the organizations chosen this year to improve drinking water access and use for the 1,020 residents of the Nuevo Huaral settlement in Lima, Peru, helping 255 households. The project involves improving the infrastructure and strengthening local capacities for managing and maintaining the water supply system.
Another of the projects is the initiative presented by Ingeniería para la Cooperación – ICLI, aims to improve socio-economic conditions, hygiene and sanitation for the population of four rural districts in Rwanda. To achieve this, supply lines and drinking water fountains will be built that will benefit 16,471 people, reducing the time spent obtaining drinking water by 90%. The project will also raise awareness on the importance of access to water, hygiene and sanitation to enhance living standards and reduce diseases linked to consuming contaminated water.
NGO Manos Unidas will install new water pipes, and build and renovate the infrastructure for rainwater collection and distribution. These new facilities will ensure that 15 communities living in the Thar Desert in India have year-round access to water. Up to 200 members of the community will be offered training in managing water resources and adopting healthy practices, and a total of 5,250 people will benefit from this action.
On the move for zero hunger: upgrading food pantries
Ferrovial has also announced the project selected as part of its program to improve food pantry infrastructure. Created by the company in response to the economic crisis in 2008, the program has improved access to food for more than 80,000 people.
The organization chosen to run this program is Nuevo Hogar Betania, an NGO based in Cadiz and with a presence in various Spanish regions, that supports people who are socially excluded and homeless to foster their full integration in society. This year, Ferrovial will upgrade the kitchen and dining room at the social care center managed by the NGO in La Línea de la Concepción.
