“The author has proved the truth of this prediction in this extraordinary and remarkably detailed book. Porter details the hardships and rewards of her early progress through life as she carried within her "a well of sorrows" and a determination to resist her harsh father’s attempts to break her spirit. Later, there are triumphs and crises, as she attains a master’s degree and raises two brilliant sons; there also are serious health challenges and the death of her husband.” – Pianofan, Amazon re

ReadersMagnet will display “The Blue House: An Elder’s Lifelong Search for Meaning and Purpose” by Myrna Denham Porter R.N., L.C.S.W. at the 2025 Los Angeles Times Festival of Books (LATFOB). The book event will take place on April 26-27, 2025, at the University of Southern California campus in Los Angeles, USA.

The Los Angeles Times Festival of Books is a free public event first held in 1996. It is the largest book festival in the country, drawing approximately 150,000 attendees annually. The two-day, open-air festival serves as a vibrant tribute to American culture through literature. The Festival highlights various authors, publishers, and vendors and features panel discussions, storytelling sessions, children’s performances, and the prestigious Los Angeles Times Book Prize ceremony.

“The Blue House” tells the story of Myrna, who was born into a family of seventeen children in 1940. The harsh realities of the Canadian Prairies shaped her early years. Instilled with values of hard work, commitment, and forgiveness, taught with contrasting styles by her parents, she set out on a path of self-discovery.

Leaving home at just fourteen to work as a nanny while pursuing her education, Myrna later emigrated to the U.S., where she built a fulfilling career as a flight attendant, earned multiple degrees, and devoted her life to making a difference in the lives of others through career and volunteer work.

Encouraged by her friend and psychologist, Dr. Jacob Shefa, Myrna began writing her memoir to pass on her wisdom and values to future generations. “The Blue House” is a testament to resilience, faith, and the pursuit of a meaningful life. This inspiring work chronicles Myrna’s journey from a remote village in Saskatchewan, Canada, to a life of perseverance, education, and service in the United States.
