Wiley Announces Team of Editors to Lead Advanced Portfolio Journals Expansion into Life & Health Sciences
Nine experienced editors selected for team to spearhead expanded journal offerings in new disciplines
Wiley (NYSE: WLY), one of the world’s largest publishers and a global leader in research and learning, today announced the team of editors selected to spearhead the expansion of its Advanced Portfolio journals further into life and health sciences, an effort which is focused on benefiting the scientific community and authors.
Last October, Wiley https://newsroom.wiley.com/press-releases/press-release-details/2024/Wiley-Expands-Advanced-Journal-Portfolio-into-Life-and-Health-Sciences-Deepens-Physical-Science-Offering/default.aspx to extend the portfolio—a series of highly-regarded journals with their roots in materials science, physics, and engineering communities—into key life and health sciences fields. This strategic move underscores Wiley’s dedication to advance knowledge at the intersection of disciplines and provide researchers with the resources they need to explore the complexities of modern science.
This expansion will enfold first by extending coverage of life and health sciences in the existing Advanced Science journal, then by subsequently launching several new Advanced journals over the next few years.
Today’s announcement represents the next big step in the expansion: Nine highly experienced editors from around the world have now been selected to drive forward the Advanced Science expansion in life and health sciences. This represents the first round of forming a group of dedicated editors in the expansion areas.
This new team comprises the following individuals:
Abel Barral Cuesta (key focus: ecology and environmental science) completed his PhD at the Université Lyon 1 and postdoctoral experience at the CNRS. Before joining Wiley, he served as editor on top-tier journals across the ecology & environment space including One Earth, Nature Ecology & Evolution and Nature Plants.
Kerstin Brachhold (biology) obtained her PhD from the University of Cologne in Germany. She joined Wiley in 2010 and is Editor-in-Chief of Advanced Biology and BioEssays. She also regularly conducts workshops on scientific writing and editorial themes at academic institutes.
Yuming Hu (genetics and genomics) holds a PhD in biochemistry and biotechnology from Ghent University. She has studied and conducted research at Wageningen University, the University of California, Davis, and Tsinghua University, employing genetics and genomics to explore mechanisms in plant development and environmental health science. She is also Editor-in-Chief of Advanced Genetics.
Andrew Jobbins (neuroscience) obtained his PhD in molecular and cell biology from the University of Leicester and conducted postdoctoral research in liver diseases and RNA therapeutics at the MRC-LMS and Imperial College London. Before joining Wiley in 2024, he served on the editorial team at Nature Communications.
Lei Lei (plant biology) leads the Advanced Science expansion as the senior manager of the Advanced life and health sciences team. She received her PhD in plant biology from Pennsylvania State University. Before joining Wiley in 2021, she served as a full-time senior editor of Nature Plants. As an editor, she drives forward Wiley’s expansion of plant science.
Monty Montano (aging) received a PhD in genetics from the Stanford University School of Medicine. He is the scientific director of the Boston Pepper OAIC at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and is on the faculty at Harvard Medical School. He is the editor for aging in Advanced Science and was hired by Wiley in 2021.
Paulina Strzyz (cell and molecular biology) earned her PhD from the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden and worked on editorial teams at Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology and Cell Press before recently joining Wiley.
Ada Wong (oncology) holds a Ph.D. in structural biology from Tsinghua University and conducted research on precision cancer medicine at the University of Macau, A*STAR’s Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, and George Washington University. She joined Wiley in December 2024.
Taolan Zhao (food, aquaculture, and agriculture) completed her PhD in genetics at the Institute of Genetics and Developmental Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, China and worked as a scientist in the same institute before joining Wiley in 2021. She is also the co-Editor-in-Chief of Modern Agriculture.
These individuals have already begun contributing to life and health sciences in the journal Advanced Science and will be instrumental in developing Wiley’s new Advanced titles in the months ahead.
“We are delighted that these distinguished professionals will help guide and enrich our expansion into life and health sciences,” said Allyn Molina, Group VP of Publishing Development at Wiley. “It’s an exciting step forward for the Advanced Portfolio and for Wiley’s research organization.”
