Red Hat Honors Nan Shan Life Insurance and Next Commercial Bank for Pioneering Open Source Initiatives at the Red Hat APAC Innovation Awards 2024 for Taiwan

Red Hat recognized the noteworthy milestones achieved by Nan Shan Life Insurance and Next Commercial Bank for their innovative use of Red Hat solutions to address evolving business solutions.

Despite the uncertain economic conditions in 2024, we have seen the remarkable milestones achieved by our customers. These awards also celebrate the achievements of 31 winners across all 11 countries, showcasing how businesses across the region have successfully leveraged Red Hat solutions to overcome challenges and pioneer new customer-centric solutions.

According to the Red Hat 2024 Global Tech Trends, the top funding priorities for businesses across the APAC region are building cloud-native applications, improving digital user experience and accelerating application/service delivery.  These findings highlight the importance of innovative solutions in the awards’ five key categories that reflect areas that can empower organizations to navigate business challenges faced today: Digital Transformation, Hybrid Cloud Infrastructure, Cloud-Native Development, Automation, and Resilience.  

The winners were chosen for their outstanding use of Red Hat solutions, demonstrating significant contributions to their business objectives. Each organization exemplifies the transformative potential of open source technology, pioneering advancements in business processes, enhancing productivity, fostering innovation and fortifying resilience in the face of challenges. Winner: Nan Shan Life Insurance

With over 60 years of dedication to Taiwan, Nan Shan Life Insurance remains steadfast in its commitment to sustainability for both its customers and society. In response to the evolving societal landscape, the company has launched two key pillars of transformation and development – ‘service empowerment’ and ‘digital empowerment’ By integrating ‘service empowerment’ into its products and leveraging resources from its ‘Health Protection Circle’ ecosystem partners, the company provides its customers with comprehensive services. Through ‘digital empowerment’, Nan Shan Life Insurance continues to strengthen data analytics and integration of insurance technology, delivering personalized products and digital service experiences to meet the diverse needs of various customer segments and transforming the value of insurance. 

In order to enhance processes, deliver greater value to customers and maximize the benefits of digital transformation, Nan Shan Life Insurance partnered with Red Hat. Under the same workload conditions, deploying Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform (OCP)  significantly reduced the required hardware resources by 75%. By utilizing OpenShift’s built-in load balancing and high availability features, zero downtime can be achieved, allowing for seamless upgrades and service updates without interruptions.The company developed an entirely new system through container adoption with continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD). This aims to streamline and accelerate the software development lifecycle as the organization moves away from traditional ways of upgrading, improving both business and IT agility.

Winner: Next Commercial Bank

Next Commercial Bank forms one of three virtual banks in Taiwan. However, unlike its competitors, the organization develops its own information system from scratch, which took a substantial amount of time to ensure it meets business requirements and surpasses the existing bank information system. As a result, there is cognitive differences between the infrastructure team that focuses on maintenance and the development teams that focuses on reducing the time to market. Withthe rising pressure of rapid application updates in the virtual banking industry, the maintenance and operation team needed a container environment that met the development team’s needs and could narrow the technical gap for maintenance and operation at the same time.

After a series of discussions and product testing with Red Hat on their organizational needs, the bank adopted Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform and migrated its applications from third-party data platforms, successfully establishing the first step for holding a large number of containers in the future. Through the integration and provision of a large number of open source tools onOpenShift Container Platform, developers no longer need to maintain these tools by themselves. Instead, they can rely on the professional support and services provided by commercial vendors and Red Hat to help them build up their enterprise technology standard, increasing the flexibility and speed of development.
