Maya Butalid’s Heartfelt Tribute to Mothers Everywhere Set to Feature at Two L.A. Book Events
Maya Butalid is a Filipino immigrant currently based in the Netherlands who has recently found her calling as an author with at least two books already out and published. Of these two, one is a collection of stories inspired by a number of different mothers she has worked with and left her inspired. Promptly titled “The Heart of a Mother,” she was compelled to share the stories of these remarkable and loving women to readers worldwide.
“Inspired by real-life mothers I’ve known, I wrote these stories hoping that it would reveal their hearts to the world, and so that their children can recognize the greatness of their mother’s love for them.”
Once a political activist, Maya Butalid is no stranger to advocacy. She was one of many Filipinos who experienced the Ferdinand Marcos dictatorship and opposed it at every turn. In 1983, she went to the Netherlands to ensure her activism couldn’t be stifled. Even after leaving the movement ten years later, she could not ignore the call to work with the marginalized and underrepresented.
It was for that reason that she got a master’s degree in psychology from Tilburg University and entered the field of social work. Throughout her career, however, the one thing that had always touched her heart and kept her striving forward was the experience of mothers doing their best for their children.
These feelings only intensified when she became a mother herself. Eventually, she wondered if she could do something to tell the stories of the many hardworking and devoted women she had met.
This was the point where she decided to turn it all into a book, titled “The Heart of a Mother,” and have it exhibited at a number of publishing events at various parts of the world.
“The Heart of a Mother” synthesizes these various stories with just the names swapped to protect identities. Many of the mothers that Butalid writes about include fellow migrants and working mothers as well as the challenges they still face to this day. Not all of these stories end happily either, but she hopes that sharing them will help remind readers about how far a mother would go for their children.
The book is currently set to feature at two book events in April 2025. The first is the Los Angeles Book Confab, organized by the self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet. The Los Angeles Book Confab will place at the Hilton Los Angeles/Universal City on April 23-24, 2025. The second will be at the L.A. Times Festival of Books 2025, which will be at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles on April 26-27, 2025. The book will be displayed at ReadersMagnet’s exhibit at booth #225.
