Providing In-depth Look at California Property Tax

Navigating formal and informal property tax appeals can be challenging. Property tax expert Robert Sperling, from the Tax & Accounting business of Thomson Reuters, will present Property Tax Matters at the Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM) roundtable on Oct. 15 in Santa Ana, Calif. Sperling will provide an in-depth look at California property tax and the ramifications of Proposition 8.

“With the recent decline in property values, realtors who are focused on commercial transactions can help their clients reduce tax liabilities,” said Joe Mulcahy, senior vice president of Property Tax for Thomson Reuters. “In his session, Sperling will explain how realtors can leverage property tax appeal opportunities through Proposition 8 and translate them into tax savings.”

Robert Sperling is director of Property Tax Services within the Tax & Accounting business of Thomson Reuters, where he leads an office practice in Orange County, Calif. He joined the Tax & Accounting business in 2007 as part of the acquisition of Property Tax Services from Deloitte Tax, LLP, where he was a senior Property Tax manager. Prior to that, Sperling was a principal consultant, process leader, and territory manager for a national property tax service provider. He began his career with the Los Angeles County Office of the Assessor. Sperling has extensive experience in real estate valuation and property tax assessment, specializing in hotels, regional malls, department stores, and high-rise office buildings. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Economics from Columbia University. Sperling is a member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation (IPT), with a Certified Member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation (CMI) designation. He is also an instructor at the IPT Property Tax School.
