DuPont Signs Preliminary Agreement to Become Major Contributor to First National Law Enforcement Museum
WILMINGTON, Del., and WASHINGTON, D.C., May 11, 2006 - DuPont and the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund (NLEOMF) today announced they have signed a Memorandum of Understanding where the company would contribute a multi-faceted package of products, services and financial support toward the construction of the first National Law Enforcement Museum. The museum, which was authorized by the U.S. Congress, is scheduled to open in Washington, D.C., in 2009.
“Through our unique science and technology capabilities, DuPont has a long tradition of helping protect those who protect us,” said DuPont Chairman and CEO Charles O. Holliday, Jr. “The construction of the National Law Enforcement Museum will honor the men and women who protect us every day, and, in some cases, who have given their lives so that we may live in a safer world.”
For more than 30 years, DuPont has worked closely with law enforcement officers through innovative products such as DuPont™ Kevlar®, the first high-performance fiber used in bullet-resistant body armor and still the key component in many protective vests worn by officers today. DuPont also played a founding role in the creation of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP)/DuPont Kevlar Survivors’ Club® – a partnership dedicated to reducing death and disability among police officers by encouraging the use of personal body armor. Since its formation in 1987, the Survivors’ Club has honored more than 3,000 officers who were spared serious or life-threatening injuries as a result of wearing bullet-resistant vests.
“From the development of the Kevlar® fiber to its instrumental role in helping build the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, DuPont has demonstrated its commitment to the law enforcement community in a variety of important ways,” said NLEOMF Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Craig W. Floyd. “We extend our sincere appreciation to DuPont for its many past contributions and its continuing interest in supporting law enforcement officers and their families.
“Partnerships such as the one between NLEOMF and DuPont are essential in assuring that law enforcement’s dedication to public safety is never taken for granted and that those officers who have made the supreme sacrifice are never forgotten,” Floyd added.
NLEOMF’s mission is to increase public support for the law enforcement profession and provide information to help promote officer safety.
“We look forward to working closely with museum leaders to finalize definitive agreements for support of this historic initiative to honor our everyday heroes,” Holliday said
The 90,000-square-foot National Law Enforcement Museum will be the first national museum in the world dedicated to law enforcement. The museum will celebrate the vital contributions that America’s law enforcement officers have made to our nation. It will be filled with hands-on activities, state-of-the-art interactive technology, and rotating educational exhibits that will explore the past, present and future of law enforcement in America. More than 500,000 visitors from around the world are expected yearly. It will be constructed across the street from the existing National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, which DuPont also helped to create.
