Undeclared Milk Allergen Results in California Company Issuing a Food Recall in Five States

LA Testing provides laboratory services to help companies comply with food testing and labeling regulations while preventing costly product recalls.

South Pasadena, CA – WEBWIRE

In December, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted information about a food recall initiated by a company based in Northern California. The recall was launched after it was discovered that milk was not declared as an allergen on the product packaging.

The dark chocolate almonds were sold in bulk and pre-packaged containers and may contain undeclared milk protein. People with allergies or severe sensitivities to this common food allergen are at risk if they unknowingly consume this product.

The Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA) requires that food labels clearly identify the food source names of all ingredients that are, or contain any protein derived from, the eight most common food allergens. These account for 90% of allergic reactions to foods and include milk, crustacean shellfish, fish, eggs, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and soybeans.

“Those with food allergies can experience a life-threatening allergic reaction if they unwittingly consume products containing allergens,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager at LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “In fact, the FDA reports that each year it estimates that anaphylaxis caused by food allergens results in 30,000 emergency room visits, 2,000 hospitalizations and 150 deaths in just the United States. Since there is no cure for food allergies, people with the condition should avoid all foods that contain the allergen or allergens that they react to when consumed.”

Protecting people from consuming food allergens accidently and helping businesses avoid costly products recalls are the food testing and labeling experts at LA Testing. Their network of laboratories provide food allergen, labeling and a wide array of other food-related testing services to the public, manufacturers, food processors, importers, distributors and retailers.
