InnerPlant Wins Special Mention from TIME Best Inventions 2021
InnerSoy Living Sensor is honored for its innovative approach to gathering data directly from plants via optical signals to alert farmers when plants are thirsty or sick to boost yields and reduce the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides
The InnerSoy Living Sensor created by InnerPlant, the company pioneering the development of living plant sensors, is recognized today with a Special Mention from TIME Best Inventions 2021. The annual list recognizes products, software, and services that are solving compelling problems in creative ways across categories that include technology, beauty, health care, food, home, and entertainment. Inventions are evaluated on originality, creativity, effectiveness, ambition, and impact.
The InnerSoy Living Sensor is a proprietary soybean plant that alerts farmers when it’s thirsty or sick using optical signals visible using a standard camera on a tractor, drone, satellite, and even an iPhone. Data directly from plants can give farmers early indication of a problem, like a lack of water or pathogen attack, before it spreads to an entire field. This potential early warning helps farmers keep plants healthy, maximizing yields and reducing the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides resulting in more profits for farmers and healthier food for consumers.
“InnerSoy is designed to change agriculture at scale and address some of the most pressing needs that farmers and the food system are facing in the future,” explains Shely Aronov, InnerPlant’s CEO and co-founder. “Innovation in seed technology is critical to helping farmers boost yields while reducing the negative impacts that the blanket use of chemicals has on the land.”

Today’s InnerSoy win follows the selection of InnerPlant’s InnerTomato as a finalist in General Excellence by Fast Company’s 2021 World Changing Ideas Award.
About Inner Plant
InnerPlant is the world’s leading developer of genetically adapted living plant sensors. Founded in 2018 by Shely Aronov and Rod Kumimoto, their team of seasoned food entrepreneurs and scientists uses millions of years of Mother Nature’s R&D and a protein extensively studied for safety as a food additive to help plants send signals that farmers can use to boost yields, increase profits, and preserve the environment.
