Alcatel-Lucent signs European Union’s Code of Conduct on Energy Consumption of Broadband Equipment

WEBWIRE

Paris - Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that it has signed the European Union’s Code of Conduct on Energy Consumption of Broadband Equipment. By signing the Code of Conduct, Alcatel-Lucent commits to make all reasonable efforts to abide to the principles described in the Code of Conduct (version 3 ‑ 2008) for the broadband communications equipment it is developing for communications services providers and enterprises while maintaining service reliability and quality levels.

Most notable of these principles is the company’s commitment tomake all reasonable efforts to achieve the power consumption targets defined in the Code of Conduct for at least 90 percent of the total port count of new model items introduced.

Alcatel-Lucent will annually provide the European Commission with information concerning the energy consumption of the broadband equipment covered by the Code of Conduct. This is equipment primarily deployed into service providers’ networks, but Alcatel-Lucent also agreed to include certain equipment typically deployed at businesses or homes, such as DSL (digital subscriber line) terminals and optical networking terminals.

“Alcatel-Lucent understands the concern our customers have about the impact their networks have on the environment, and we have taken an advanced, structured and holistic approach toward developing eco-sustainable solutions. A key component of our program is to build smarter, eco-sustainable networks for them, while helping them reduce their total cost of ownership,” said James Watt, Chief Technology Officer, Alcatel-Lucent Carrier Group. “We applaud the signatories of this code of conduct because we support the industry’s efforts to become more energy efficient. We know the communications industry through the development of innovative communications applications will play a critical role in enabling all industries to reduce their carbon footprint.”

Alcatel-Lucent’s commitment for a more eco-friendly broadband technology is also shown by the contributions in standardization bodies such as the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI), Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS), and the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and in other organizations such as the Broadband Forum and the Home Gateway Initiative, where Alcatel-Lucent provided input on techniques for power reduction of broadband equipment and is helping define a uniform methodology to measure the power consumption of broadband equipment.

In 2008 Alcatel-Lucent committed to improving the energy efficiency of key products by at least 20 percent over the next two years, and that year Alcatel-Lucent developed eco-declarations for more than 95 percent of its product portfolio. These summarize the impact these products have on the environment, taking into account characteristics such as energy consumption, emissions, material content, packaging and disposal concerns.

Early this summer the company launched at its facility in Villarceaux, France the world’s first alternative energy laboratory and pilot site dedicated to the telecommunications market. In July, Alcatel-Lucent’s announced its new 100 gigabit Ethernet router, which is designed to minimize space and power requirements, key vectors for containing costs and maintaining an environmentally friendly operation for network providers. This high-capacity router’s enhancements in thermal efficiency reduce power consumption and were made possible by innovations from Bell Labs and further reduce the already low power consumption profile of Alcatel-Lucent’s router portfolio, which is among the best in the industry. Earlier that same month, the company also announced today launched the first “green DSL” an innovative high-capacity and eco-efficient digital subscriber line (DSL) platform – enabling service providers to deliver applications over their installed copper base, all while consuming up to 25% less power compared to conventional DSL solutions.
