Toxic Dangers in the Home: More Common than Most People Realize

A recent article, “Seven toxic dangers to avoid in your home” discusses common environmental and health dangers in the typical home. It was published this week on EmaxHealth’s website. The article offers information about a number of toxins that many people don’t even realize are present and could cause them harm.

Included in the article was information about the use of antimicrobial soaps. According to the article these products can not only damage the liver and cause thyroid problems, but their use can also acts a nursery for drug resistant strains of bacteria. Drug resistant bacteria, including MRSA and C. diff, which once were almost exclusively healthcare associated infections (HAIs), are now regularly being associated with community acquired infections.

The article also discussed indoor air quality (IAQ) concerns ranging from tobacco smoke and off-gassing from household chemicals to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from paints and synthetic chemicals from air fresheners. Some of the associated airborne chemicals have been associated with everything from triggering migraines and asthma to cancer due to prolonged exposures.

Wrapping up the article was information about Bisphenol A (BPA). This chemical is found in everything from the linings in canned foods and beverages to its use in commonly found plastic food containers.
