DURHAM, N.C. , - EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) announced that the company has earned LEED Gold – Commercial Interiors certification for Phases 1 and 2 of its 450,000 square foot Center of Excellence in Durham, North Carolina. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an internationally recognized green building rating and certification system of the U.S. Green Building Council .
In 2009, EMC ® ’s Global Real Estate and Facilities team began planning for the design and development of a vacant warehouse facility in Durham with the goal of creating a new, energy-efficient, virtual data center and EMC’s first U.S.-based Center of Excellence. Partnering with design firm Symmes Maini & McKee Associates , and construction company DPR Construction , EMC focused on developing a data center with sustainability as a primary design criterion, featuring efficiency innovations such as a rooftop water collection system, free air cooling for much of the year, and flywheel technology that eliminates the need for battery storage in the uninterrupted power supply systems.
LEED – Commercial Interiors certification recognizes high-performance green spaces that are healthy, productive places to work; are less costly to operate and maintain; and have a reduced environmental footprint. Highlights of EMC’s LEED Gold – Commercial Interiors certification include:
-Overall energy savings of 34 percent
-Ability to utilize “free cooling” 57 percent of the year
-Reduced carbon footprint of nearly 100 million pounds of CO 2
-Reduced potable water use of 78 percent
