FedEx and KIB Partner to Restore the Fall Creek Watershed
INDIANAPOLIS – In recognition of the FedEx 40th anniversary this month and the company’s commitment to serving Indianapolis, FedEx team members along with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful (KIB) will participate in a volunteer project to plant more than 100 Indiana native trees to help restore the Fall Creek watershed, as part of a Global Month of Service in April. FedEx awarded KIB a grant of $25,000 for the Fall Creek watershed community restoration project, in partnership with National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), leveraging nearly $100,000 in match funding from local sources to benefit neighborhoods in the Fall Creek watershed.
Spanning multiple counties in central Indiana, The Fall Creek watershed represents one of the largest contiguous forest blocks in the city. Approximately 75 FedEx volunteers will carry out this tree planting project, which is part of a broader collective, Reconnecting to Our Waterways (ROW), of neighborhood groups, the City of Indianapolis, and key organizations to improve riparian corridors.
Located less than a mile from Fall Creek, this tree planting will enhance the gateway to the neighborhood, the Indiana School for the Deaf and the State Fairgrounds while also helping to reduce pollutants into nearby Fall Creek. Part of a grant program sponsored by FedEx and NFWF, this project will address pressing urban environmental challenges. KIB, along with 14 nonprofits from across the county, was selected by FedEx and NFWF to receive funding in 2013.
FedEx team members from around the world will participate in a Global Month of Service in April; through KIB, FedEx volunteers are supporting the FedEx commitment to serving Indianapolis and making local communities cleaner and healthier places to live.
