Planned Parenthood to Participate in Congressional Black Caucus Foundation 44th Annual Legislative Conference
Women Leaders Will Discuss Birth Control Access during “Sex, Politics, and Black Women”; Aisha and Danielle Moodie-Mills to Moderate Issue Forum with Honorary Host Congresswoman Robin Kelly and Sponsor BET Networks
As part of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF) 44th Annual Legislative Conference, Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) will partner with honorary host Congresswoman Robin Kelly and sponsor BET Networks for an issue forum on Saturday, September 27, at 10 a.m. EST. The forum, “Sex, Politics, and Black Women: A real talk about what reproductive freedom means in the wake of Hobby Lobby,” will highlight why barriers to birth control access and this summer’s Supreme Court decision directly impact black women.
“Planned Parenthood is grateful for the support of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation for providing a space for this important conversation on reproductive freedom,” said Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. “It is partnerships like this, with leaders like Congresswoman Robin Kelly and BET Networks, that allow us to reach more communities with an important message – access to birth control is pivotal in expanding economic opportunity for all women.”
The forum, which will take place at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, will be moderated by Aisha and Danielle Moodie-Mills, hosts of Politini onBLIS.fm. Saturday’s panel will include panelists from the reproductive justice movement and religious leaders, speaking on the topic of women’s health as an economic issue for people of all ages. Those panelists include:
- Rev. Marcia Dyson of M and M Dyson, LLC
- Kimberly Foxx representing Planned Parenthood of Illinois board
- Jeryl Hayes of Advocates for Youth
- Monica Raye Simpson of Sister Song Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective
BET Networks will serve as the media sponsor for the issue forum – continuing the network’s partnership with Planned Parenthood to promote healthy living through awareness of reproductive health issue and positive images of black women in the media.
In addition to the issue forum, Planned Parenthood will have a booth at the Convention Center beginning on Thursday, September 25, where participants can learn more about Planned Parenthood’s preventive health care services. Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC, is partnering with the CBC Spouses on the same day for their community health fair to provide rapid HIV testing. You can join the partnership on social media using the Twitter hashtags #CBCFALC14 and #PPRealTalk.
