The Make-Believe Doctor is a medical mystery/thriller that takes place in Blackwell, a small town in Southeastern Massachusetts, in the 1980s. The principal character, Jacob Reason, an itinerant internist, comes to town to fill in following the death by suicide of one of the local physicians.
 
Reason learns that Blackwell has been terrorized by a killer whose victims are young women. He soon finds himself involved in the detection of the Blackwell strangler. In this, he is assisted by Liz Denny, a friend from years earlier. Some of the characters include Ross Cassidy, an internist and head of the hospital staff; Tim, another internist, who never grew up; Art, the third man in the medical office and a compulsive gambler; BeeJay who rules the medical office with an iron hand; Todd the janitor with a photographic memory; and Rowley Nickerson, the local paper’s ace reporter.

Author Bio
 
Gil Brinckerhoff was born and raised in New York City and Long Island. During his early teens, he spent a memorable three years in Japan. He and his wife live on Cape Cod in the village of Yarmouth Port.
 
 
After under-graduate training in physics, he served a two-year hitch in the Army and then attended medical school at the George Washington University. After completing a residency in dermatology at Boston University School of Medicine, he opened an office and joined the staff of the Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. Gil has long been fascinated by the variety of human temperament and the psychopathologies exhibited by his fellow man. Out of that interest grew the characters in this novel.
