W.R. Blocher’s Unnerving Post-Apocalyptic Military Thriller Set to Exhibit at the L.A. Times Festival of Books 2024

W.R. Blocher is a Navy veteran and retired journalist who decided to write novels to share his life-long thoughts on the human condition. One of his works is “The Dead Side” series, and the first book is now slated to appear in an exhibit at the L.A. Times Festival of Books 2024. The story is a dystopian thriller with a very abrupt start but has already left plenty of readers thoughtful towards the end.

“This is one of those proverbial can’t-put-it-down books. As I got into it I was classifying it as something in the horror/fantasy category, though it doesn’t have a lot of over the top explicit violence like some books in this genre. Then, as I got towards the end, I started to see it more as a kind of allegory. It is very thought provoking and an entertaining read.” – Cynthia A. Brown

The upcoming L.A. Times Festival of Books will have hundreds of novels and story collections, each one exploring ideas about the human condition. Among these is the first book in “The Dead Side” trilogy by journalist-turned-author W.R. Blocher.

Blocher also happens to be a Navy veteran, and it informs much of the book’s content as a dystopian thriller. Set in a violent, unfamiliar world, it follows a former Marine named Sam who awoke sitting upon a cold tombstone with no memory other than the vaguest recollection of his military station.

He is soon joined by a woman named Sara who is also suffering from the same amnesia. It doesn’t take long before the pair encounter a brutal military organization that press-gangs them, and they soon learn about the current state of the world.

Sam and Sara are both subjected to vicious treatment by the sergeants running the organizations. “The Dead Side” goes to great lengths to describe the heinous cruelty and hatred that fuels this destructive, tyrannical group.

Eventually, they make their escape after a daring rescue of another squad mate. Now on the run, they are eventually rescued by a brother-and-sister pair who brings them to the only haven from the murderous regime (eventually described henceforth as the Enemy).

Fans of alternative history and speculative fiction can certainly find much to ponder in W.R. Blocher’s “The Dead Side.” They can read it for themselves at the L.A. Times Festival of Books 2024 when the book goes on display at the self-publishing and book marketing company ReadersMagnet’s exhibit at booth #225. The festival is set for April 20-21, 2024, at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA. Get a copy on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
