MIDDLE EAST COATINGS SHOW 2010: WACKER Presents Sustainable Polymeric Building Materials and Silicones for the Coatings, Construction and Adhesives Sectors
Munich/Dubai, At the Middle East Coatings Show (MECS) in Dubai from March 29 to 31, 2010, the Munich-based WACKER Group will present sustainable product solutions from its coatings, construction and adhesives areas of expertise. Spotlighted under the slogan “Inspired By Excellence,” the products will range from solvent-free silicone resins, through silicone resin emulsions for heat-resistant or water-based coatings, to environmentally-friendly dispersions for low-odor interior paints. WACKER will also present dispersible polymer powders for flexible sealing slurries and for energy-efficient exterior insulation and finish systems (EIFS).
WACKER’s highlights at this year’s MECS include its innovative VINNAPAS® products – dispersible polymer powders, dispersions and solid resins based on vinyl acetate/ethylene (VAE) copolymers and terpolymers. They are used in a variety of modern construction and coating applications.
VINNAPAS® VAE Dispersions: Odorless, Solvent-Free Decorative Paints
VINNAPAS® dispersions based on vinyl acetate/ethylene (VAE) copolymers are ideal for environmentally-friendly, decorative paints. They are free of plasticizers and solvents, and are extremely low in formaldehyde and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). On the one hand, certain VINNAPAS® VAE dispersions are ideal for the formulation of odorless indoor paints. On the other, special VINNAPAS® dispersions based on vinyl acetate/ethylene/vinyl chloride terpolymers are excellent binders for decorative outdoor paints.
VINNAPAS® Dispersible Polymer Powders: Innovative Binders for Modern Construction and Coating Applications
With VINNAPAS® polymer powders, end products display enhanced processability, good adhesion to all substrates, greater flexibility and flexural strength, and improved weather resistance. These advantages make VINNAPAS® ideal for modern construction and coating applications, such as sealing slurries for sewers, pipes and basements, and as an additive for energy-efficient EIFS. VINNAPAS® polymer powders do not contain plasticizers or film-forming aids, and therefore have low emission levels.
VINNAPAS® Solid Resins: Polyvinyl Acetate for Coatings and Adhesives Applications
Due to their excellent adhesion to various substrates, such as wood, cardboard and metal, VINNAPAS® solid resins are the binders preferred by manufacturers of solvent-based adhesives. VINNAPAS® can also be used to formulate primers for metallizing packaging or modifying NC coatings. The product range covers homopolymers and copolymers in various viscosities and delivery forms.
Further WACKER Product Highlights at MECS 2010
SILRES® IC 232 for Long-Lasting Coatings
SILRES® IC 232, an alkoxy silicone resin intermediate, gives organic binders outstanding resistance to heat and weathering. It is used in the production of siliconized polyester, alkyd, epoxy and acrylic resins. SILRES® IC 232 is notable for its especially high reactivity and so, when it comes to speed, offers its users clear advantages when formulating their binder systems. One possible application is in coil coatings for outdoor use.
SILRES® MP 50 E: Water-Based Silicone Resin Emulsion
Concern about the environment has increasingly led to the replacement of solvent-based paints with water-based ones. When doing this, it is crucial that the positive characteristics of the binder are not compromised. Here, SILRES® MP 50 E, a silicone resin emulsion, conforms to regulations of leading institutes, such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (e.g. FDA 175.300). It is now possible to create a water-based silicone resin coating that, when fully hardened, is suitable for kitchen appliances, cooking utensils and grills.
SILRES® HP: Silicone-Resin-Based, UV-Resistant Coating Systems for Protection Against Corrosion
The new SILRES® HP product line is another of WACKER’s innovations. It combines the usual advantages of silicone resins, such as excellent weathering resistance, with the ability to cure at room temperature as a two-component system. Coating systems modified with SILRES® HP are resistant to solvents. They are also more resistant to, and better protected from, aggressive UV radiation, corrosion and chemicals. These systems are mostly used for such applications as bridges and industrial plant parts, which have to endure heat, intense sunlight and moisture.
SILRES® BS: Silicone-Resin and Silane-Based Coating Systems for Effective Masonry Protection
SILRES® BS silicone resin emulsion paints rank among the most advanced facade coating systems. The reason for their huge success is the good marriage between the outstanding properties of mineral and synthetic-resin-bound paints. These properties include excellent water-vapor permeability, extremely low water absorption and exceptional durability. SILRES® BS products are innovative, environmentally-compatible ingredients for the production of water-repellent masonry coatings, and construction chemicals and materials, such as concrete, gypsum plasterboards and insulation materials.
VINNOL® Surface-Coating Resins: Versatile Binders for Industrial Coatings and Printing Inks
VINNOL® is WACKER’s brand name for a broad range of copolymers and terpolymers based on vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate. Integrating functional groups makes for specific properties such as excellent adhesion to metal and plastic, outstanding pigment wetting and curability. VINNOL® resins are primarily used in solvent-based coatings and printing inks. All VINNOL® grades can be combined with each other, allowing the formulation to be customized, e.g. for gravure, inkjet and screen printing inks or for coatings on metal or metallized substrates in heat-sealing packaging applications. Further applications include plastic coatings, wood varnishes and adhesives for fittings.
HDK® Pyrogenic Silicas – Complete Flow Control of Both Liquid and Powder Coating Materials
WACKER’s pyrogenic silicas (HDK®) are ideal for imparting thixotropy, for reinforcing coating materials, printing inks, adhesives and sealants, for controlling powder flow and for many other applications. In the formulation of low-solvent coatings (high solids), such as for automotive coatings, and of solventless and water-based systems, HDK® permits reliable control over coating thickness and leveling. It also improves the systems’ storage stability by effectively preventing pigment and filler sedimentation. In clear coats, HDK® ensures high transparency.
