T-series Core Platform and M-Series Multiservice Routers Provide Infrastructure for World’s Largest IPv6 Network

SUNNYVALE, Calif., November 30th, 2005 - Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR) today announced that its M- and T-series routing platforms have been selected for the core of the China Next Generation Internet (CNGI) project. The CNGI project is a Chinese government-funded initiative to promote Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) throughout China, and is expected to become the largest IPv6 network in the world. Juniper Networks platforms were selected for their proven, industry-leading IPv6 capabilities, and will be deployed in CNGI’s participating networks, including the China Education and Research Network (CERNET2), China Mobile, China Netcom, China Railcom, China Telecom and China Unicom.

The CNGI project was launched in 2003 by China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), and its charter is to create a next-generation national IPv6 backbone covering 20 cities and 39 massive network points of presence (GigaPOPs) to provide pervasive advanced IP services. IPv6 is the next generation Internet Protocol, and improves on the current version by greatly multiplying the number of IP addresses to accommodate the growing number of networked devices, users and applications with built-in security mechanisms.

"As one of the world’s most ambitious IPv6 projects, all of China’s major service providers and communications networks are participating in the CNGI project" said Eric Yu, Juniper Networks’ vice president, Greater China. "Juniper has been delivering routing platforms with advanced IPv6 capabilities for several years, and based on our proven leadership in this space and an extensive evaluation process, all of the participants decided to base their portions of the CNGI infrastructure on our M- and T-series platforms"

Once deployed, the Juniper Networks platforms will provide a test bed for Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) and enable the service providers to offer a wide variety of advanced IPv6-based services in the near future. These services include Virtual Private Networking (VPN), high-quality IP voice and video streaming, as well as third-generation (3G) mobile applications. The M- and T-series platforms will also provide interoperability with networks based on the current version Internet Protocol, IPv4, by using advanced IPv4-to-IPv6 interworking features supported by the industry-leading JUNOS operating system. These JUNOS features will also enable CNGI to facilitate the seamless transition of IPv4 networks to IPv6 as the networks expand to support the growing needs of businesses, government, institutions, and individuals in the dynamic Chinese economy.

Shipping since April 2002, over 1,000 T-series core routing platform units are deployed in production networks today worldwide. With the multi-chassis TX Matrix technology, the T-series provides a seamless migration path to multi-terabit speeds.

The M-series multiservice routing platform is a versatile core and edge solution, reliably supporting Layer 2 services, including ATM, Ethernet and Frame Relay; full Layer 3 services; and many other advanced security and connectivity services, including firewall, virtual routers, MPLS, VPLS, data encryption.

Both the M- and T-series leverage JUNOS, the industry’s only operating system that combines proven reliability with a development cycle that ensures continuous, non-disruptive feature and functionality enhancements designed to maximize the capabilities of the IPv6 protocol.

"The T-series continues to be the core routing platform of choice for networks where performance, reliability and advanced capabilities are requirements" said Adam Judd, vice president of Asia Pacific for Juniper Networks. "We are very proud that both our M- and T-series routing platforms have been chosen by all the participants of CNGI to play a key role in one of world’s most advanced networks"
